The rise of the multigenerational families... good trend, bad trend?

The rise of the multigenerational families... good trend, bad trend?

In the last eight months I have done literally thousands of outbound dials. Yes, outbound!

It’s when you pick up the phone to call people. ;) As a result, I have received so much wonderful feedback - noting societal shifts, mindsets, language, fears, hopes, dreams… all the stuff that makes people tick. I really want to know and it’s been a very empowering experience.

One interesting detail is the family make up, which is always a point of interest in my discovery calls. While we are currently a family household of 5 adults and one 2 year old child I had no idea just how “normal” we are. Yes, normal. I know! Who would have thought?!

*This is our family that lives with us minus my daughter-in-law who took the pic.

“Multigenerational households are defined as including two or more adult generations (with adults mainly ages 25 or older) or a “skipped generation,” which consists of grandparents and their grandchildren younger than 25.” With that definition in mind, I would say roughly 30% of the people I have talked to are in a multigenerational family household.

Even on my street three out of the nine homes are multigenerational! I created a video detailing this growing phenomenon along with an analysis of what is the root cause: is this a good thing or a bad thing, and is this trend going to continue?
