It’s 1962 all over again…

It’s 1962 all over again…

Depending on how old you are, or when you came to the United States, you may or may not remember JFK (John F Kennedy’s) Presidential Fitness Program.

My mom and dad jumped right on board with JFK’s vision and instructed us kids (5 of us!) to get in line and meet the challenge.

We had a little booklet with all the fitness exercises recommended to create a fit body and therefore a fit mind. It was right at the top of the bookshelf in our family room.

I used it regularly and it served me well.

Eventually it led me to fall in love with the sport of gymnastics after watching Olga Korbut and Nadia Comancia in the Olympics.

I was ready in part due to JFK’s little fitness handbook of exercises.

I had been inculcated since a wee child that physical fitness was paramount. My entire growing up years my parents took us to the YMCA at least once a week. Into their 90’s they still have their YMCA membership!

But my, oh my, how things have changed…

* A shocking 42.4% of US adults are obese

* 1 in 300 children and adolescents develop type 1 diabetes by age 20 years

* 1 in 36 children have autism spectrum disorder

* 2024 is the first year the US expects more than 2 million new cases of cancer

* In 2022 the cost of healthcare in the US was $4.5 trillion, or $13,493 per person

Something is gravely wrong with our nation’s overall physical health.

For myself, events from this past month resurfaced the need to really take stock of my health and shift my priorities quickly.

I was unexpectedly hospitalized for four days and had a very close brush with a possible major surgery. But because of my rapid improvement that surgery was taken off the table along with a less invasive procedure that was deemed not needed as well. Yeah!

What a wake up call!

Ten days later (RFK) Robert F Kennedy, the nephew of President John Kennedy was ringing the bell on his deep concern for the health and well being of our nation’s children. A big focus on their food sources and what we put in their bodies.

Yes!

This was all the more confirmation that I needed to prioritize my health as well as my entire family.

The question becomes, does fitness and well being have anything to do with your family legacy and strengthening your family economy?

Absolutely.

One could say that is the first economy because being fit physically and mentally has everything to do with productivity.

I am certain our GDP is directly related to the health of our nation. Break that down and every family unit is critical to make for a strong and healthy nation including our ability to build our own family economy.

I say, let that be us!

If you feel your family’s health is a bedrock to your family’s future then join me in this movement to take control of our health. Our family depends on us to do so!

In my next email I'll detail out my new fitness game plan.
