Do you have a fitness plan? Here’s mine…

As a quick update my plan is a bit cramped right now due to an injured wrist that’s been going on for 3 months now. This is all the result of a fall off my bike on July 23.

Hubby decided to lead me down a short mountain biking trail and that’s when I fell off my bike and took the blow onto my right wrist.

So every time I attempt to go to the gym my wrist ends up hurting like crazy.

In fact, it hurts for any kind of twisty motion on my hand - which is a lot of tasks.

I truly love lifting weights but it’s off limits for now.

Despite a handful of physical therapy sessions it definitely didn’t get better.

In desperation I booked an appointment with a hand specialist and within five minutes he diagnosed me with a torn ligament - specifically TFCC.

Here’s the textbook description:

Type 1 TFCC tears are caused by injury from falling and landing on an outstretched hand, which can damage the ligament, cartilage, and tendons to the region.

Also known as FOOSH (Falling on an outstretched hand).

So I got a steroid injection straight into the injured area and am now wearing a special brace to help mitigate movement in that area.

Now that we have that little piece of news out of the way, here’s my daily workout regimen.

1. Hydrow rowing machine - a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

This comes with a monitor so I can row to any one of 5000 workouts that span the globe.

I prefer workout videos with no narration.

This is my solitude time to defrag and just row through some beautiful sites like the Thames river in Great Britain, Elisabeth Harbor in the Bahamas, Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand and thousands of other exotic locations.

October 20th, 2024 is my two year anniversary.

I’ve since racked up 837,000 meters (520 miles) since I fired up my machine and have bragging rights to some fancy socks.

In reality I should be over 1 million meters (minimum) but life gets in the way here and there.

I do my rowing first thing in the morning and have a cup of coffee nearby accompanied with a YouTube morning prayer video.

2. Daily walk - this is my most important fitness activity.

A walk through my neighborhood is 30 minutes and I can keep it shorter if I need to OR I can do the full blown 60 minute walk which includes a big hike up “Scary Hill”.

Walking is when I sort out lots of things in my head.

This is when I get most of my breakthrough moments to help me gain clarity and solve problems.

I also pray during my walks.

I pray over my family and my neighbors as I have gotten to know so many of them by virtue of my daily walk.

I plan to do daily walks well into my nineties.

My parents are 91 and 95 and have been walkers their entire lives.

Plus, our village has over 90 miles of hiking trails.

Hubby and I like to do these in the Fall and Winter months when it’s not so hot and the snakes are hibernating.
3. Calisthenics - my weight lifting is quite limited at this time so I have a list of calisthenics I do in the living room.

If you’re wondering what “calisthenics” means, here’s the Wikipedia definition.

“Calisthenics is a form of strength training that utilizes an individual's body weight as resistance to perform multi-joint, compound movements with little or no equipment.”

I was a sports coach for 12 years so I am very knowledgeable on this topic.

It is a passion of mine and I am aching to devote far more time to calisthenics and stretching.

I like to put in 15-30 minutes and often put in a session between my PC use.

4. Stretching - this is at the bottom of the list not because it's the least important, it's just hard to fit it into the day.

That said, stretching to me is second level.

Stretching is getting high on life because it's just so darn relaxing. It really calms my nerves better than almost anything.

I did a ton of stretching both as a gymnast and then as a coach.

I really miss all the stretching I did from all those years. Hopefully in full retirement years I can do a full hour a day. Oh the joy!

Once I get my YouTube channel straightened out I’ll post a good handful of my exercises.

So that’s pretty much it.

I would love to hear what kind of a current fitness plan you have or the start of one however small it is.

Great things start with small things and grow from there.
